Featured Staff Review: The Declaration

The Declaration by Gemma Malley

Surplus Anna has committed the worst crime known to humanity.

She was born.

In the not-so-distant future, a series of drugs called Longevity have made it possible to live forever, pausing the aging process indefinitely. No more disease. No more decay. No more death. However, in order to preserve the dwindling resources of the world, everyone must sign the Declaration agreeing to never have a child. Couples found in violation of this rule are severely punished and their offspring are considered illegals, or Surpluses.

Anna’s parents broke the rules. Since the age of two when the Authorities discovered her hidden in her parents’ attic, Anna has lived in a Surplus house, a training facility where are illegal persons are instructed and indoctrinated to be the servants for Legal people. Under a cruel mistress and her staff, children are beaten, belittled, tortured, and starved. All Anna can hope to be in her life is a Useful Asset to someone else. She’s taught about her horrible, selfish parents who have defied the law and nature to give her a miserable life. Classes are given in being totally subservient and submissive. She endures 15 years of abuse before someone arrives at her institution that changes everything.

Peter has been on the Outside for 15 years. He seems to know things about Anna that no one else in the world could know . . . He claims to know her parents. He says they still love her and want her back.

Following Peter and breaking out of her prison and into a network of helpful, caring adults could get Anna killed. But can she afford to give up this one chance at a life Outside?

Highly recommended for dystopia fans or anyone who likes a fast-paced story with good characters and interesting plot.

Featured Teen Review: Forest of Hands and Teeth

The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

I loved this book. I have to say I shied away from reading for a while but after i read this i started again. It a romance but at the same time has zombies… i know a weird mix but it’s wonderful. I have to say I didn’t care that much for the main character. She’s realy selfish but I think that’s what the book was about. The love and the selfishness.
